Have you ever had a user call you, and the thought of guiding them through running ipconfig or winver is daunting? Hail Support is a program that users can run to submit a support request. The program runs identically on MacOS X (Intel and PowerPC), Windows (NT and 2000+), and GNU/Linux (GTK 2) systems, and is free, as in, “here is a free beer, and take as many as you want for your friends, but you have to drink it in this NetAdminTools stein that provides more free beer if you twist the handle”.

The program will email a preconfigured email address with a list of network adapter configuration details, operating system type, and other OS information that can be configured. The program does this with its own SMTP engine, so if mail is misconfigured it will work. The only requirement is a valid TCP/IP network stack. The program is a single executable. No additional libraries or dlls are installed. After the request is submitted a support page is launched via the user’s web browser. All configuration is stored in a single text file that the application is run from. For instance, here is a sample hailsettings.txt file:

The above configuration file will execute a shell script (/users/usr4/hs/h.sh) to get administrator-defined system information, and will email network interface details via the smtp.greatbigisp.net smtp server to firstname.lastname@example.org. The subject of the email will be Support Request – . The user can enter additional subject information. After the user pushes the Hail Support button to email support, the http://example.com/supportpage.html page comes up. Note that this page on NetAdminTools.com comes up if the hailsettings.txt file is not configured. Here is how this program looks from a user of an XP workstation’s perspective:
