REALbasic creates a single machine code executable that will run on Older Macs, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and Microsoft Windows systems from 98 on. There is no requirement to install a bunch of DLLs, so the target system has fewer side effects to worry about. Certainly rollback is quite clear. Further, you don't need a server and/or an application framework to run the application. True, many applications require collaboration and the ability to provide services to a large number of users; however, if you don't need that complexity, consider something like REALbasic, where you get multi-platform function without relying on web services. Consider what happens to your applications when the network fails. Having a standalone network monitoring app that doesn't require a webserver and a database might be crucial. Is it really a good idea to scan insurance cards and submit them to a database hundreds of miles away as part of an outsourced medical practice management system? We all know the pros and cons here, just don't get too carried away. Pick the right tool for the job, and be very careful about who controls the means to do your job, whether it is your ISP or your application framework.
