There is a free set of utilities for Solaris available here that provides many of the GNU tools and other free software for Solaris. If you don't have a console you will need to make sure that the host you telnet in from is resolvable from your Solaris box (add the host to /etc/hosts or DNS). Then, use xhost +ip.ip.ip.ip on the machine you are accessing the Solaris box from (ip is the ip address of the Solaris box). Finally, stick the Solaris Companion CD into the CD-ROM drive, and run /cdrom/s8_software_companion/installer to install the software. A window will pop up in X that looks like this:



Just follow the menus. The software will show up in /opt/sfw. Adjust your paths accordingly.
